You may have heard that the IRS recently issued draft regulations that would drastically change how it defines and treats political activity of 501(c)(4) organizations.
The deadline for submitting comments on the draft regulations is tomorrow, February 27. Here are two easy options for adding your voice to the discussion:
- Draft and submit your own comments, even very brief ones, at http://www.regulations.gov/#!docketDetail;D=IRS-2013-0038 (click on the “Comment Now” button). Because of the volume of comments that have already been submitted (nearly 95,000 as of today, up nearly 20,000 since just yesterday!), the page may take longer than you might expect to load.
- Submit comments based on a model prepared by the “Bright Lines Project” (disclosure: two of our Principals, Greg Colvin and Rosemary Fei, are on the BLP drafting committee).
We, along with countless others, think the proposed regulations in their current form are deeply problematic, although their issuance provides a good opportunity for public discussion about how best to fix the current, inadequate rules governing political campaign activity. If you want to participate in that discussion, now is a good time to get involved!
